FAQs

What are savENRG® phase change materials?
savENRG® Phase Change Materials (PCMs) are non-toxic, organic, and inorganic products engineered for precise temperature control.
What is latent heat?
Energy released or absorbed by a body or a thermodynamic system during a constant-temperature process.

What are the main differences between inorganic/salt-based and organic/bio-based PCMs?

One of the differences between inorganic and organic/bio-based PCMs is the latent heat numbers per volume. Because organic/bio-based PCMs are less dense than the inorganic/salt-based PCMs, the latent heat per equal volume of inorganic/salt-based PCMs will be consistently higher than per the same volume of organic/bio-based PCMs. For example, under the same conditions, 1 liter of inorganic/salt-based PCM is capable of reliably providing longer temperature control than 1 liter of organic/bio-based PCM.

Inorganic or salt/water based PCMs are always non-flammable, unlike bio-based or organic PCMs.

We also have to add a rarely mentioned advantage of inorganic PCMs: salt based PCMs never turn rancid.

How safe are savENRG® PCMs?

All savENRG® PCM formulations are non-toxic. In addition, salt-based PCMs are always non-flammable. Some inorganic/salt-based PCMs may be corrosive to certain metals. Test data is available on request.

How are savENRG® PCMs encapsulated?

savENRG® PCMs are encapsulated in the following materials: HDPE, PP, nylon, and multilayered pouches. Depending on the compatibility characteristics with the requested PCMs, we provide recommendations for suitable encapsulations. Please contact info@rgees.com for more information.

What are the properties of phase change materials such as latent heat, physical states, thermal conductivity, density, etc.?

Please refer to the TDS (technical data sheets) on the Products page for each of our different PCMs. savENRG® PCMs experience insignificant changes in density and volume during phase change.

Is there a maximum pressure the encapsulated PCM can withstand?

This depends on the type of encapsulation.

How are savENRG® products shipped?

savENRG® bulk materials are shipped in 10-liter or bigger containers. We offer encapsulating services in-house. Please note that PCM properties can change if handled incorrectly. Contact us to discuss your encapsulation needs: info@rgees.com

How are savENRG® PCMs stored?

PCMs are stored in a cool dry place, in sealed containers to best retain and preserve their properties.

Can savENRG® PCMs be utilized together with different types of insulation?

Most of our PCMs have good compatibility with different insulation materials. These cannot mix directly with insulation materials.

Can two different types of PCMs be mixed together?

No. This process will not allow developing PCM with new properties.

What are the main/potential markets for PCM use?

The PCM market is currently experiencing high growth on a global scale as a result of increasing demand for energy-saving materials in various industries.

These PCM applications include:

  • Medical devices
  • Solar energy storage
  • Pharmaceutical cold chain
  • Thermal backup for refrigerators
  • Agrifood cold storage/transportation
  • Temperature regulating construction materials
  • Temperature controlling textiles with micro and macro-encapsulated PCMs

FAQs about Cold Chain application

Why choose savENRG® Cold Chain refrigerants?

Our broad line of products features inorganic/salt-based and organic/bio-based PCM packs in various forms of liquids, powders, and gels. At RGEES, our clients experience excellent customer service, economical prices, and efficient PCM-based Cold Chain refrigerants in required temperature ranges for their temperature controlling needs.

What is the advantage of using inorganic/salt-based PCM packs over the organic/bio-based in thermal shippers?

Due to higher density, salt-based PCM pack will take lesser space in the insulated shipper than organic PCM pack, providing the same, if not longer, temperature control.

Comparing to organic/bio PCMs, salt-based PCM pack creates a higher payload/volume ratio for the same outer dimensions of a shipper and under the same temperature controlling conditions.

I have a clinical study that involves shipping blood to our labs at Controlled Room Temperature. The blood degrades quickly when it gets cold. I’ve tried gel packs but found the tubes got unacceptably cold during transport in Winter. I’ve heard that savENRG® packs are very good at preventing this. What product do you recommend?

We suggest you use our savENRG® CRT packs which are specifically designed to reliably maintain biological products between +15°-25°C year-round. savENRG® CRT Packs are failproof PCM products engineered to provide reliable temperature control in the tight +15°C-25°C range, keeping products at Controlled Room Temperature regardless of the varying hot or cold ambient conditions during transport.

Our company has decided to reduce dry ice usage in air shipments and are looking for alternatives. Can you provide a good substitute?

savENRG® Ice packs filled with PCM-HS26N is a practical, safe and re-useable substitute for dry ice.

How much PCM should I use?

The amount of PCM necessary is calculated by heating and cooling loads of the shippers. Our engineers will run this free calculation and advise which PCMs and in what quantities would work best for you.

Please contact info@rgees.com with the following information:

  • Size of shipping container in inches
  • Type of insulation materials
  • Thickness of insulation material in inches
  • Expected ambient temperatures in Celsius
  • Range of temperatures required inside the shipper in Celsius
  • Duration of temperature control required in hours
Can you help us to create custom packaging for our company?

We can assist you in designing the packaging per your specific temperature needs.

What are the important factors in PCM performance for Cold Chain?

Phase change temperatures – PCM packs must operate in the appropriate temperature ranges. savENRG® PCM packs are offered in various temperatures required by the cold chain industry for efficient temperature control.

Latent heat – the higher the latent heat, the longer the PCM packs will provide the desired temperature control. savENRG® PCMs feature high latent heat numbers.

Precise temperature control – savENRG® cold chain refrigerants operate in safe and appropriate temperature ranges with release and absorption of latent heat over a narrow temperature range which is very important for cold chain.

Balance of cost vs efficiency – We offer the perfect balance of cost vs. product quality.

Safety – savENRG® cold chain refrigerants are non-toxic and safe to use.
